In the PET and rPET beverage market, the trend toward label-free packaging is rapidly gaining momentum. More brands are choosing this approach not only to reduce their environmental footprint but also to simplify production and stand out on shelves.
SMI supports companies on this journey by offering expert guidance in designing and manufacturing label-free containers. With our high-performance stretch-blow moulders, capable of speeds up to 55,000 bottles per hour, SMI helps businesses combine sustainability with efficiency.
Choosing label-free bottles means embracing a forward-looking, circular economy solution. By removing labels, inks and adhesives, recycling becomes easier and more efficient. Their clean, minimal design also enhances product appeal, strengthens brand identity and creates a sleek, modern look that catches the eye.
From a production standpoint, label-free bottles streamline bottling lines by eliminating labelling machines and reducing materials and maintenance.
A key innovation supporting this approach is the use of 2D codes, such as QR codes. These can be applied to caps, closures or capsules or laser-engraved directly onto the bottle surface. This compact solution allows companies to provide all necessary regulatory, product, and marketing information without a physical label.
Label-less bottles are eye-catching, efficient, sustainable and cost-effective.
By removing labels from the process, companies can save not only on the costs of the labelling machines, but also on the costs of raw materials.
Here’s a concrete example, based on average Italian market costs and a production rate of 10,000 bottles/hour.
One compelling example of label-free innovation that combines sustainability and visual impact comes from Águas de Carvalhelhos, a well-known Portuguese mineral water brand.
With the support of SMI, Carvalhelhos adopted new label-free PET bottles, available in 0.33L, 0.5L, and 1.5L formats, featuring a label-free design. This was made possible by advanced moulds from SMIMEC, installed on the EBS 8 KL ERGON stretch-blow moulder.
What makes this solution truly unique is the way the bottle itself becomes the communication medium: the Carvalhelhos logo and key product information—including Braille text for accessibility—are engraved directly onto the surface of the bottle. The traditional area reserved for the label has been reimagined: the usual ribs were removed, creating a clean space where a combination of raised and recessed elements brings the brand to life in a tactile and elegant way.
Beyond its technical innovation, this design also supports the company’s marketing goals. The result is a bottle that stands out on the shelf, reinforces brand identity and sends a clear message about environmental responsibility, without compromising on aesthetics or functionality.
